Planning For Borneo 2018

My wife Bobbi and I have been fascinated with the possibility of traveling to Borneo for many years and our dream trip is almost here.  As I often say, a good life is when you can: "Plan a Trip, Take a Trip and then Plan the Next Trip".

Thanks to YouTube and travel sites, I've learned a lot about Borneo and travel planning as we prepared for our three week nature adventure in Borneo.  I will probably write another Blog post about travel preparations before we leave.  So, why Borneo?  Just watch a few YouTube videos like this one from a travel Vlogger, "Wander with Angela" about her trip to Mulu in Borneo and you will understand.

Our long fascination with Borneo starts with the Orangutan and we can't wait to see this amazing primate in the wild.  I did learn that there is not a "G" at the end of Orangutan as I have always pronounce it.  I am enjoying correcting others on this tidbit of spelling.  I have also learned that the island of Borneo has lost more than 100,000 wild orangutans between 1999 and 2015 due to logging and deforestation of the rainforests. There is a great amount of work going on there to save wild orangutans and we will be visiting the  Sepilok rehabilitation center to learn about that and hopefully we will get to see Orangutan in the wild.

Our serious planning started last February when we booked a 12-day wildlife tour with Wild Planet Adventures. We will have private guides take us around Borneo to visit several rainforest areas.  We won't be roughing it, staying at amazing nature lodges located up rivers deep in the rainforest.  In addition to orangutan, we will be seeing pigmy elephants, proboscis monkey, sun bear, tarsier and a huge addition to my personal bird watching list.

Since we will probably only have one chance to visit this amazing place, we tacked on an additional week at the Marriot Mulu Resort next to Mulu World Heritage Area National Park, home to even more wildlife, expansive caves and millions of bats!

Getting to Borneo is not easy. It will take 17 hours to fly to our first stop in Singapore where we will stay for a couple of days before flying over to Borneo.  While there we will take in the World Heritage Site Singapore Botanical Gardens and more.  Singapore looks amazing and we look forward to exploring the Hawker food stalls, Gardens by the Bay and taking my own photos of this skyline.

So that's our trip and starting in early June I hope to add more Blog posts and photos here.  Click on the links in this post to check out the travel opportunities you could add to your future trip to Borneo.  Remember, life is good when you can plan a trip, take a trip and plan the next trip!
